I am based in Northern California in Yolo County. Since 2005, I have worked in a wide variety of settings with diverse client populations, including sensory integration clinics, outpatient mental health facilities, public schools, client homes, and higher education, including teaching as clinical faculty at the University of Wisconsin- Madison and University of the Pacific. Locally, I most recently had the pleasure of leading occupational therapy services for Winters Joint Unified School District.

My clinical expertise includes working with individuals facing developmental, emotional, or physical challenges, from infancy to young adulthood, with a particular focus on children on the autism spectrum and those with sensory integration differences. I hold specialty certifications in sensory integration and feeding intervention. I am currently undergoing training in myofascial release to explore its potential as a therapeutic tool. There’s always something new to learn!

Treatment Approaches & Specialized Training

My therapeutic approach is informed by advanced training in these areas:

  • Ayres Sensory Integration®
  • The Zones of Regulation
  • Trauma-informed care
  • DIR/floortime
  • Positive behavioral supports
  • Get Permission Approach to Feeding
  • The Incredible Years®

A central tenet of my practice is a client-centered, play-based approach that values understanding the client’s and family’s perspective and supporting development through play. I highly value interdisciplinary collaboration, frequently building partnerships with other professionals—such as your speech and physical therapists, mental health clinicians, nutritionists, physicians, paraeducators, and administrators—to best meet your needs and goals. In my therapy services, I work to create a safe, playful learning environment that encourages risk-taking and growth through engaging activities that don’t feel like “therapy.”

A unique aspect of my work involves bridging my clinical OT practice with my background in drama, improvisation, and performing arts, using the arts as a therapeutic tool. My clinical doctorate research focused on using theater, improvisation, and puppetry as a means to address social skills challenges in children with behavioral and mental health concerns. You can often find me at my happy place, the Woodland Opera House, where I most recently directed a youth production of the musical The Big One Oh! and stage managed the musical adaptation of Mean Girls.

This clinical practice is the next step in my journey to improve the therapeutic experiences of families with special needs, and to shed light on the ways occupational therapy can better the way children are supported in their schools, homes, and communities. I feel strongly that families should not have to endure hardship simply to get the support their children deserve.

I look forward to learning about your family’s situation and helping you find a path to the best ecosystem for you and your child’s success! Please don’t hesitate to schedule a free consultation to discuss how we might be able to work together.

Mr. Josh
